Math Contests

Math 24 Meets
The Math 24 game is a mathematical game in which the object is to find a way to add, subtract, multiply, or divide the four numbers on the card so that the end result is 24. For an example card with the numbers 4,7,8,8, a possible solution is the following: 8/8=1, 7-1=6, 6×4=24. There are nine official variations of the 24 Game. The tournament-style competition 24 Challenge is based on the game.

Cards are divided into three levels of difficulty. The levels are indicated by the dots on the cards.  There are one-dot cards, two-dot cards, and three-dot cards.

The 24 game also not only helps to make quick thinking, but it greatly helps to influence quick mental math.

The Math 24 Meets will be take place in February at different schools throughout the Whitewater TAG Network.  Students in grades four through seven can compete in this exciting tournament.

Below are the decks being used by grade level:

4th Grade:  Single Digit (33976)
5th Grade:  Double Digit (33976)
6th Grade:  Exponents (37976) and Integers (33576)

Math Meets
Students in fifth through eighth grade in each school district in the area have the opportunity to compete in an area Math Meet. Students may be selected by administering the Math Meet Screener, by district or standardized test scores, or by teacher recommendation. Teams consist of four students from each grade level. Each gender should be represented on the eight member team. Regional Math Meets are held to determine which teams will go on to the Mega Math Meet.

The WTN Math Meet is a program borrowed from the Dane County Talented and Gifted Coordinators Network. The original program began in the Sun Prairie Area School District in 1981 and was coordinated by Tom Bindl, fourth grade teacher, and Gary Hanson, high school math teacher. The purpose of the Math Meet was to recognize and encourage exceptional mathematical talents. The Regional Math Meet events are as follows:

Event 1:  Problem Solving without the use of a calculator
Event 2:  Consumer Problem Solving with a calculator
Event 3:  Geometry and Measurement Problem Solving
Event 4:  Mental Math
Event 5:  Team Problem Solving
