Event is on October 14, 2010, 8:30 am to 2 pm. Flyers were distributed at the meeting and schools must register with Cheryl in addition to sending in the fees to Shelia Fox, treasurer. Registrations are due NOW. You will not be allowed to participate if you have not registered directly with Cheryl. You may register by e-mail giving her the information on the distributed registration flyer. Materials are also on our web site. It will be the same program as it has been in the past as it is very successful. Please send 7 & 8th graders who have not participated in the past. The committee needs registration help. If you can help, please let Cheryl know. Park in the Young Auditorium lot, not at a meter. If you get a ticket, dont pay it. Just mail it back with documentation of the event you were attending. In the morning Arden James does a great job with kids on leadership. He gets them to think, and gets them physically involved. Lunch is on your own brown bag or fast food a few miles away. In the afternoon students will assume leadership roles in group work. WCATY Information was distributed and the various programs explained. Contact Rebecca at WCATY (google it) for more information. Susan Henn offered to share her parent letter and Julie Supernaw offered to help anyone who needs it. Lots of our members participate as they find it a great opportunity for many g/t students. ARTS IMMERSION: Carol Meland reported that the event is November 30, 2010 and the play is Inspecting Carol (not Meland). Art Immersion is an opportunity for four 7 or 8th grade students to spend a day at UW-WW Center of the Arts participating in 2 studio classes (taught by professors from the art, music and theatre departments) and attending a theater performance. The classes will probably be similar this year drumming, make up, pottery, dance, photography, etc. The Talk Back is very successful and we hope to repeat it. Classes should be firmed up by early October. In late October, registrations will be sent by e-mail to members who have signed up and paid for the event. There will be a week-long window after registrations are sent out and then class assignments will be made for all received registrations. Registrants received later will be slotted into the classes that have openings. Members may respond electronically as well as by fax or snail mail. H.S. LEADERSHIP Conference: Marty McGinley will do programming with his teachers and the program will be similar to last year. Do not bring the same students. Members are asked to bring a team of 6 high school students to the UW-WW campus for a day of interactive activities on a topic of leadership. Please only bring six as the program works better with smaller teams. Have alternates available in case of last minute illness or test anxiety of a student. The event is February 16th at the UW-WW campus, in the University Center. Schools that register teams will be contacted with additional details prior to the event. Chaperones should be prepared to participate and supervise not correct papers or whatever. PROGRAM Susan Henn reported on our December program and business meeting which will be unusual. This is an opportunity not to be missed as we will be spending the day with Jean Petersen, a nationally known expert on social emotional needs of the gifted. Information was sent out earlier and the link follows. You are encouraged to bring as many teachers and guidance counselors as you can but you must REGISTER at the given web site, See the attached flyer as well as this link for the Dec. 15th. Petersen Workshop: HYPERLINK "http://www.uww.edu/conteduc/camps/workshops/talendtedstudents.php" http://www.uww.edu/conteduc/camps/workshops/talendtedstudents.php We will begin our business meeting at 8 am. Note this time change and please try to be there on time as we only have an hour to get business done prior to the workshop start of 9 am. Note that this workshop is FREE including lunch. Dont miss it!!!! Thank UW-Whitewaters Scott Peters for putting this together. Note that we will be meeting at the University Center Ballroom. Maps available on line. Allow time to park and walk to the building. March meeting topic will be Using Formative Assessment in the RTi model. We will also edit the Southern Lakes Anthology. SOUTHERN LAKES ANTHOLOGY: Amy Gee reporting. The Southern Lakes Anthology is a writing/drawing program in which participating schools bring a total of 24 entries from their school district for judging. On our judging day, January 25th, all participating districts will bring a team of three judges who will evaluate students work and chose the best ones for publication in our Southern Lakes Anthology. This project looks for high quality and it is recommend that WTN members hold a local judging in their school to choose the best 24 entries to bring in January. Remember that each entry must be print ready. It will be scanned as is. Members are encouraged to bring more than three judges if they can. It is important to let the committee know the strength area of each judge. Librarians, school board members, administrators, and retired teachers are good sources for judges. Art judges are especially needed. Please go to our web site for lesson ideas, Pressy instead of Powerpoint, forms, time lines, etc. Information will also be sent electronically to members in early October. Please follow the due dates. Coordinators are responsible for the pieces being error free. Dont hurt kids and get them disqualified by not checking carefully. The theme is Treasures. Be sure that the theme is not included in the students titles. Deadlines in the packets are your deadlines. Please modify them within your district to accommodate what you need to do. You will need to let Amy Gee know how many entries you are bringing and their categories so judges can be assigned. There is a snow date in case of weather issues. If you are going to be late to the judging, call. Coordinators should plan to stay until 1 -2 pm. Your judges can leave earlier once judging is done. On judging day, bring 3 copies of the check off list and bring 3 x 5 cards with names and pronunciation. Please dont use symbols; use words. You must have the student entry form attached to their piece. TOUCH OF RED: In this program, high school students exhibit 3D art at the Southern Lakes Anthology Recognition. Students taking AP Art can use their portfolio project. The event cost is $5. Past years event have been very well received by the younger students as well as the high school artists. It is good PR for your district. The artist will be asked to speak briefly about their work to the assembly. Encourage your gifted art students to participate. MATH 24: Pam Sorensen distributed Math 24 packets at the meeting. It lists the decks for each grade. Host schools are mostly worked out. Go to the Math 24 web site for more info, HYPERLINK "http://WWW.math24.com" WWW.math24.com. A team is 3 students and an adult. Larger schools can bring additional teams. If you have more than 4 classrooms you can bring two teams. If more than 6, you can bring 3 teams. Try not to have kids memorize cards, as this spoils the competition for the others. Refer to handouts for details. This program is not restricted to g/t students. It is for 4th 7th grade. All hosts and their dates must be set by the December 15th meeting. Let Pam know now if you will not be participating. The final schedule will be mailed out after the December meeting. The fee covers trophies and refreshment money. If possible, all supplies will be available at December meeting. Cost is $45 per new team. MATH MEET: Tiffany Erbentraut reported. Teams must have both grades and genders. Accelerated students compete in the grade they are registered for. Math Meet involves individual and team problem solving. With permission a school can bring more than one team. Regionals are by size of district. This program is for high g/t math kids. Practice tests and screeners will be available if you dont have them from past years. The same practice problems are used from year to year so keep the booklet. Hosts are rotated from year to year. Mega meets are in May at UW Madison or Edgewood College. Please complete regionals by April 1 to allow for planning for Mega meets. There was discussion of possible alternatives to the present Mega Meet format. 1) continue as in the past. 2) Have our own Mega Meet at UW-Whitewater. 3) Have regionals only, no Mega meet. Please let Tiffany know your preference. If we do our own, we would need a separate chair for that portion of this program. WEB SITE: Jennifer Petruska is our web master.
